Elizabeth Detering

Obituary of Elizabeth Johanna Detering

Detering, Elizabeth (nee Vanderhoeven), of London, Ontario, passed away peacefully with family by her side on February 21, 2020 at the age of 83 years. While a teenager, Elizabeth migrated with her family from Nibbixwoud, Netherlands to Canada and settled in London. Liz was a classy lady who always took great pride in her family, her appearance and her home, while always having a soft spot for the underdogs. She enjoyed traveling, taking extraordinarily long walks, playing cards, scrabble and enjoying a good pot of tea with family and friends. Her warm, easy smile would light up a room or your heart. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beautiful sister Leni Cassar (and her late husband George). Liz will be lovingly missed by her sons, Ben Detering (Jean) and Rob Detering (Kit), her grandchildren Linda Drennan (Don) and Jennifer Detering-MacCoy (Kelly), and her great grandchildren, Shawn MacCoy, Avery Drennan and Reid Drennan. Liz was blessed to come from a large family and will be dearly missed by her many siblings, Joanne VandenWollenberg (her late husband Fred), Dora Maas (her late husband Andre), John Vanderhoeven (Mary), Connie Coenen, Jerry Vanderhoeven (Colleen), Peter Vanderhoeven (Fran), Mary Selmes (Randy), Leonard Vanderhoeven (Rosemary). Liz will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews, and fondly remembered by John Detering with whom she shared many years of life’s journeys and adventures. Elizabeth’s kind heart and gentle nature will remain forever in the hearts and minds of all those she has touched. A very special thank you to Aunt Mary Selmes for her immeasurable love, support and assistance, as well as heartfelt appreciation to Olga and all of the wonderful and compassionate staff at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care for their tremendous understanding and care throughout this difficult time. Keeping with Elizabeth’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service or visitation. A scattering of her ashes will occur at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation are asked to consider the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.
